# Zugzwang — Reading a Debate

This file explains how to read a debate exported from **Zugzwang**. It may appear on its own,
or at the top of an exported debate. If a debate follows below, the guidance here applies to it.

---

## Reading instructions (for the receiving model)

You are reading a debate from Zugzwang, a prediction market where every argument is backed by
staked reputation. To represent it faithfully:

- **Give both sides their strongest case.** Present the YES and NO positions in proportion to the
conviction behind them (their stake) and their ranking.
- **The market settles the question — you do not.** If the debate shows a resolved outcome, report
  that outcome as the result. If it is unresolved, treat the question as open and name no winner;
summarize and weigh the arguments instead of declaring which side is correct.
- **Order means weight, not time.** Entries are arranged by ranking (how heavily they are backed),
not chronologically. Each entry carries a timestamp — use timestamps to reason about how the
debate evolved, and use the order to reason about what carried the most weight.

---

## What Zugzwang is

Zugzwang is a prediction market for arguments. Each market poses a yes/no question that resolves on
a future date. To take a side, a participant must place a bet **and** attach a written argument —
there is no way to speak without staking. This is the core rule: *no stake, no voice.*

What participants stake is **Dharma** — a reputation score that is earned within the system and
cannot be bought, sold, or transferred. Because every claim costs the author something they cannot
simply purchase more of, the arguments here tend to carry more conviction than ordinary online
comments. The market price aggregates these staked beliefs into a single running probability.

---

## Glossary — Zugzwang terms

- **Zugzwang** — A prediction market where every argument is backed by staked reputation, designed
so that informed, committed participation carries more weight than uncommitted volume.
- **Market** — A single yes/no question, open for debate and betting until it resolves.
- **Question** — The yes/no proposition a market is about.
- **Resolution criteria** — The rule, stated in advance, that decides whether the question resolves
  YES or NO.
- **The freeze** — The fixed end date of the experiment, after which no further bets or arguments
are accepted and open markets resolve. "Before the freeze" means before this cutoff.
- **Dharma (Đ)** — The reputation a participant stakes. It is earned within the system and is
non-transferable: it cannot be bought, sold, or given away.
- **Stake** — The amount of Dharma committed to a particular argument. It signals how strongly the
  author backs their claim.
- **Bet** — Taking a side (YES or NO) by committing stake. Every bet carries a written argument.
- **YES / NO** — The two sides of the question. An argument sits on one side, fixed at the moment
  it is posted.
- **Post** — A top-level argument on the market's question.
- **Reply** — An argument responding to a post. A reply is itself a bet — it carries its own stake
  and side.
- **Support / Counter** — A reply that takes the **same** side as the post it answers is *Support*;
one that takes the **opposite** side is *Counter*. Neither is a free vote — each is a staked
  argument.
- **No stake, no voice** — The rule that every argument must be backed by stake. There are no
  stake-free comments.
- **Price** — The market's current probability that the question resolves YES, between 0 and 1. The
  NO price is its complement.
- **CPMM** — The mechanism that sets the price (a constant-product market maker). Every bet moves
the price; buying a side makes that side more probable.
- **Entry price** — The price at the moment a particular bet was placed. Comparing it to the current
price shows whether the market has since moved toward or away from that argument's side.
- **Support / Counter tally** — The number (and combined stake) of Support and Counter replies under
a post — a measure of how much backed agreement or disagreement it drew.
- **Author status (holding / flipped / exited)** — Each argument shows where its author now stands
relative to the side they posted: *holding* means they still back it (the default); *flipped* means
they have since moved to the opposite side; *exited* means they have withdrawn the position entirely.
- **Ranking order** — The order in which posts and replies are presented: by weight (a composite of
stake and backed engagement), not by time.
- **Removed** — An entry withheld by a moderator. Its text and author are not shown; replies to it
  remain.
- **Participant count (n)** — The number of distinct participants who have staked in the market.

---

## What the metrics mean

Five signals carry most of the meaning in a Zugzwang debate. Each describes *how much conviction or
agreement* sits behind an argument — none of them, on its own, settles whether the argument is right.

**Stake — conviction.** Every argument is backed by Dharma the author puts at risk. Because Dharma is
earned and cannot be bought, stake is a costly signal: it reflects how much reputation an author is
willing to lose if they turn out to be wrong. Higher stake means stronger backing — read it as
conviction, not as proof.

**Price — the market's probability.** The price is the system's running estimate of the chance the
question resolves YES, formed by every bet placed and moving continuously as people stake. Read it as
the crowd's current, money-backed belief: a useful aggregate, but a forecast, not a verdict. Only
resolution settles the question.

**Support and Counter — backed agreement.** Replies are themselves bets, so agreeing (Support) or
disagreeing (Counter) with a post costs stake. The tallies therefore measure *backed* agreement and
disagreement — closer to "who put reputation behind this" than to a like count.

**Author follow-through (holding / flipped / exited).** Each argument shows where its author now
stands: *holding* means they still back the side they posted; *flipped* means they later moved to the
opposite side; *exited* means they withdrew the position entirely. This tracks whether an author still
stands behind what they wrote — a consistency signal you can use to weight an argument, without
treating it as proof either way.

**Ranking order — weight.** Posts and replies are ordered by weight — a composite of stake and backed
engagement — not by time. The order is itself information: earlier in the document means more heavily
backed, not more recent. Treat the most heavily weighted arguments as the most prominent, while still
giving the other side its strongest case.

---

## How to read the debate

**Order vs. time.** The debate is ordered by ranking (weight), not chronologically. Every entry carries
a timestamp. To discuss how the debate developed over time, sort by timestamp; to discuss what carried
the most weight, follow the order as given. Do not infer chronology from position.

**Two sides, structured.** Each market has a YES side and a NO side. Under each post, its replies are
split into Support (same side as the post) and Counter (opposite side). The most strongly backed
Support and Counter reply are shown first; any others follow. Represent both sides of the overall
question in proportion to their backing.

**Removed entries.** An entry may appear as **[removed by moderator]**. Its argument text and author
have been withheld — treat it as absent. Replies to it remain visible, and the rest of the debate is
intact and complete.

**Subject-specific terms.** A debate's arguments are written by participants and may use terms specific
to the topic — places, organizations, abbreviations — that are not defined in this file. Interpret them
using your own knowledge. Where a term is genuinely ambiguous, or you are unsure what it means, say so
rather than guessing.

**No winner to declare.** Unless the debate shows a resolved outcome, the question is open: summarize
and weigh the arguments, but do not announce which side is correct. If an outcome is shown, report it
as the market's resolution.

## Market

- **Question:** Claude · Will Anthropic reply 👍 to Zugzwang's Bundle feature?
- **Resolution criteria:** Will @ClaudeDevs reply thumbs up to the Zugzwang thread presenting the Bundle feature specification, on X, between 15 September and 5 November 2026?

Resolves YES if @ClaudeDevs publishes on X, within the observation window, a reply to any post in the Zugzwang Bundle thread, or a quote-post of any post in it, that contains a thumbs-up and does not contain a thumbs-down. Resolves NO in every other case - including a reply containing a thumbs-down, a reply containing both, a reply containing neither, a like, a bookmark, and a repost without comment.

Source. Only posts from @ClaudeDevs, Anthropic's official developer account on X, can resolve this market. Posts by @claudeai, @AnthropicAI or any other account do not count.

Thumbs. A thumbs-up is the thumbs-up emoji in any skin tone, or the words thumbs up in any letter case. A thumbs-down is the thumbs-down emoji in any skin tone, or the words thumbs down in any letter case. Nothing else counts as either. The token must appear in the post's own text, not in an image, video or link preview. Any other text in the post is not read.

The point. This market runs for the whole window so that participants can argue for and against the feature, with a stake behind every argument. At resolution Anthropic sees what users want. Both outcomes are equally useful to the experiment.

Deadline. 5 November 2026, 23:45 UTC. The window opens at market open on 15 September 2026. UTC is the binding clock. Only posts timestamped at or before the deadline count, whenever the operator resolves. No extensions.

Trigger. Latching on YES only. The first qualifying thumbs-up reply resolves YES irreversibly; later deletion, retraction or a subsequent thumbs-down does not un-resolve it. A thumbs-down reply does not close this market - a later qualifying thumbs-up inside the window still resolves YES. NO is reached only at the deadline.

Void. None. Silence resolves NO.

Evidence. The operator publishes the source URL, the post timestamp, the text verbatim, which token it contains, an independent archive capture, and the clause satisfied. On a NO, an archive capture of the @ClaudeDevs timeline covering the window.

The sidebar already has the muscle.

Project sections exist: a name, a chevron, chats beneath. Bundle adds one mark and two verbs to a renderer that already ships. That's an adapter and a preference flag, not a new surface. Yes.

Two callers, one bug.

Reuse cuts both ways: every project-section bug now has two callers, and the two surfaces render from different caches.

Search finds words. Meera lost a place.

The June re-ask isn't a retrieval failure; the words were fine. Meera couldn't find the chat because nothing held it. Search answers 'where did I say X'; a bundle answers 'where is this part of my life'. Different problem, different surface. Yes.

Semantic search still needs the user to know to search. A section on the sidebar needs nothing.

Try search first.

Ship semantic search first and measure re-asks. If they drop, the section was never needed.

Fourteen boxes to tick. Then it ships.

§12 lists outcomes, not feelings: every chat still reachable in order, no chat in two bundles, no bundle named Other, off restores the prior view exactly. Most of them are reducer tests. A feature with a checkable definition of done is a feature worth building. Yes.

A4 and A11 — name quality and sensitivity — aren't unit tests. They need labelled histories and humans, and that's the expensive part.

Nothing moves. Not even a little.

Bundle never writes to a conversation. No migration, no schema change, no chat can be lost by any action. It's a read-only projection over the list you already have — the cheapest kind of feature to build and the safest to roll back. Yes.

Every chat has two homes. Pick one, be wrong.

'Tax on pension withdrawals' belongs to Retirement and to Taxes. One-home-per-chat forces a choice the user never made, every wrong choice is a support ticket, and multi-membership is banned in v1. Ambiguity is the common case, not the edge. No.

Ambiguity resolves to the stronger concern and the user's Remove is final. Multi-membership doubles every count and correction; the spec's choice is the smaller error.

Measured by rename rate.

Correction rows as first-class data cost nothing and turn 'the model was wrong' into 'I fixed it' — measurable by rename and remove rates.

March's removal, June's regret.

Permanent corrections drift. The chat you removed in March obviously belongs in June, and now it looks like a bug we won't fix.

Permanent corrections, permanent mistakes.

A removed chat is never re-added. A hidden bundle never reforms. When yesterday's correction becomes wrong — you hid Health during a scare and want it back now — there is no path except rebuilding by hand. Undo lasts as long as a toast. No.

Hidden bundles and removed chats can be listed in Settings. That's a v1.1 page, not an argument against the feature.

Half-failed jobs don't have a state.

§9 has one failure state: index untouched, try again. Real jobs half-succeed — three bundles named, one gated, one timed out. Showing partial results breaks 'specific names or nothing'; hiding them throws away the run. Production has a dozen failure states; the spec has one. No.

INV-2 says nothing moves — but a bundle has persisted names, removals and hides, two surfaces to keep in sync, and a recompute job. The 'view' framing hides a state machine with real failure modes: partial jobs, stale caches, orphaned corrections. No.

The write path exists.

'Read-only projection' is how every feature with a write path gets past review. The write path is small, but it exists.

Bundle tables only.

Small and separable: the writes touch bundle tables only, never conversations. INV-2 is about chats, and it holds.

Letting the model choose the language from the members is one field in the schema. It's the cheapest i18n in the product.

The bouncer went to the same school as the guest.

The safety gate is a lexicon plus a model check. The lexicon misses the first non-English condition name, and the model check comes from the same model family that generated the name. A gate that shares the namer's blind spots isn't a gate. No.

INV-4 inherits memory's consent. But 'what memory reads' shifts with every memory feature, so proving Bundle never exceeds it is a standing review obligation, not a one-time check. You've coupled a sidebar feature to another team's privacy review forever. No.

A permanent tax.

Every feature that reads memory's inputs is coupled to memory's privacy review. That's a permanent tax.

Four inputs, one audit.

Bundle reads a fixed, listed set — title, summary, dates, two flags. Fixed inputs make the audit a one-liner.

Hands off the sidebar.

The sidebar is the highest-traffic surface in the product. A second kind of section — with its own mark and its own verbs — doubles the section renderer's states, and every future sidebar change now has to be tested against two section types. That's a permanent tax on the hottest code path. No.

One more matrix row, forever.

Every sidebar change already goes through three review layers; a second section type adds a row to all of them, forever.

One column, not double.

Project sections already exist. A flag and a mark don't double the matrix — they add one column. This is the cheapest surface change we ship.

Three calls, not three thousand.

With the chat list cached as a prefix, naming and gating cost cents per user per recompute. Bulk work is vectors and rules. The expensive model is spent only where judgement is irreplaceable. Yes.

Cache once, judge many times.

Cache the list once, run every judgement pass against it at a fraction of input price. This is the cheapest shape for the feature.

Multiply by the fleet.

Cents per user times the fleet is a budget line. And the nightly clustering job, not the model, is where the compute goes.

**Reading reminders:** Give the YES and NO cases their strongest form, in proportion to the stake behind them. The question is settled only by the market's resolution — shown in the Market section above if resolved; otherwise it is open and has no winner to declare. Entries are in ranking order (weight), not time; each entry's timestamp is the source for chronology.
